Vancouver eyes greening links

Economic growth and environment protection are not mutually exclusive, and the mayor of Vancouver, one of the greenest cities globally, is in Shanghai to push for more green collaboration.

“Vancouver’s green businesses are very successful, making the city one of the greenest in the world,” Gregor Robertson, its mayor who’s leading the city’s largest-ever business and cultural delegation to China, told Shanghai Daily in an exclusive interview yesterday.

“We expect industry leaders from Vancouver to better connect with Shanghai companies, and find more collaboration opportunities.”

The green industry offers business opportunities in clean technologies and products, green building design and construction, sustainability consulting and education, recycling, food and green transport.

“Vancouver has proven that a city can grow and prosper and still be a green capital,” Robertson said.

Vancouver’s green economy, contributing 5 percent of the city’s total economic output, has been growing at more than twice as fast as traditional sectors such as resources and consumer goods.

Michael Green Architecture Inc, one of the firms in the delegation, is a leader in new technologies for the construction of tall and carbon-sequestering wood buildings.

“We have such buildings in Canada, the United States and Europe,” said Michael Green, its principal.

He hopes such buildings may also be built in China because “it is the place where vast urbanization is taking place.”

The delegation also includes companies producing the world’s most efficient data server, makers of electric bikes and designers of urban public space, Robertson said.
