Wall Street ends lower; focus shifts to earnings

STOCKS ended lower on Wall Street after a weak forecast for global growth from the International Monetary Fund yesterday. Now investors turn their attention to corporate earnings reports.

The Dow Jones industrial average ended the day down 110 points at 13,473. The Standard & Poor's 500 index finished down 14 points at 1,441. And the Nasdaq composite index was down 47 at 3,065.

Aluminum company Alcoa is set to report its results first. Analysts expect earnings for Standard & Poor's 500 companies to be lower than a year ago - the first time that has happened in almost three years.

About four stocks fell for every one that rose yesterday. Early figures show trading volume was about average, about 3.2 billion shares.
