Well-known faces among Coca-Cola torchbearers

SIX torchbearers selected by the Coca-Cola Company, including globally renowned Chinese pianist Lang Lang, actress Jiang Yiyan and CEO of COFCO Coca-Cola Beverages Limited Luan Xiuju, carried the Rio Olympic flame to light up the Iguacu on Thursday, attracting large crowds on its way to the opening ceremony of the games in a little over a month.

“Share the Passion” was the theme of today’s leg of the torch relay in Iguacu, a small town known for the dramatic Iguacu Falls. As Coca-Cola-selected torchbearers, actress Jiang Yiyan and pianist Lang Lang interacted with local people.

“When people around me touched the torch, I saw happiness sparkled in their eyes,” said Jiang Yiyan, the 70th torchbearer along the Iguacu route. “I strongly felt the joy and passion the Olympic Games gives us. I also felt the power of people around me, which will inspire me in next chapter of my life.”

Jiang Yiyan passed the Olympic flame to Luan Xiuju. Both of them made the V sign and cheered for each other. Thanks to the warm weather and festive atmosphere, large enthusiastic crowds, including expatriate Chinese residents, cheered for the torchbearers along the route as they spread the happiness the Olympic Games brings. Today is the 59th day of the 2016 Olympic torch relay.

Renowned pianist Lang Lang was the 75th person to carry the torch. Prior to the torch relay, Lang Lang held an impromptu performance in front of the famous Iguacu Falls in the morning.

“Music and sports are the same platforms for people to connect with each other regardless of their nationalities, culture and age,” said Lang Lang, who has now served as the torchbearer three times after also joining the Olympic torch relays in the lead-up to the two previous games in Beijing and London. “I am so lucky that I am the pianist and the torchbearer, I was able to share how much I was touched by people’s pursuit of goodness.”

Lang Lang composed the music for Coca-Cola’s latest “That’s Gold” commercial tailor made for Olympics campaign this year, in which he thanks his mentor, Zhu Yafen, for her long support. The “That’s Gold” campaign emphasizes the idea that wining ‘gold’ also means sharing your dreams with people close to you and supporting each other in pursuit of ambitious goals.

The Olympic flame for Rio 2016 arrived in Brasilia on May 3, when the official torch relay within the host country began. On August 5, 2016, the Olympic flame in torch will be used to light the Olympic cauldron during the opening ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games at the legendary Maracanã Stadium having traveled through 329 cities around the world and carried by 12,000 torchbearers.

Starting in 1928, Coca-Cola has maintained the longest continuous relationship with the Olympics and has been involved with the Olympic torch relay since the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games. So far, Coca-Cola has selected a total of 15,000 torchbearers and 10,000 escort runners through its global system, the most among all organizations from around the world that participate in the relay.
