Zijin shares down 7% on news of deadly accident
ZIJIN Mining Group Co said it has suspended the production of a copper smelting plant in southeastern Fujian Province after a gas poisoning accident killed three workers during the Spring Festival holiday.
A repair worker fainted after entering a clogged tank in the plant and three other workers also collapsed as they tried to rescue their colleague, Zijin Mining said in a filing to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange today.
It said three workers died of gas poisoning and one was saved and is now in stable condition. An investigation is under way in the 200,000-ton-a-year copper smelting plant that was in trial operation.
The shares of Zijin, China's leading gold and copper producer, fell almost 7 percent in morning trade in Hong Kong.
