1.3 million rural vendors own online stores
THE number of online stores run by rural business owners more than doubled in 2011 as 1.31 million rural producers now sell products online, according to a recent survey made by Alibaba Group and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
Alibaba, China's largest e-commerce company that operates Taobao.com, says the number of Taobao-licensed stores in rural towns and villages reached 590,260 at the end of 2011.
The survey also showed that online transaction volume in China's rural area reached 20.9 billion yuan, still a fraction of total sales by traditional means.
Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Guangdong and Fujian have more online vendors and bigger sales volumes than other provinces.
About 24 percent of rural online business owners surveyed said poor transportation remains the biggest obstacle for their business expansion, especially in mountainous provinces like Yunnan and Shanxi.
