2 carriers to cooperate on resources
CHINA Unicom and China Telecom announced a cooperation deal yesterday that did little to calm speculation of a merger between the two carriers.
Both denied talks of merger again; instead saying they were cooperating on sharing resources like network infrastructure, handset technology and capital.
The two carriers have been unable to break the market stronghold of its bigger rival China Mobile, which holds over 60 percent of mobile market.
Shares of both China Unicom and China Telecom, listed in Hong Kong, surged yesterday.
China Unicom rose 3.84 percent while China Telecom gained 4.82 percent.
The deal is expected to help both carriers with their handset models supporting all kinds of networks. They will also negotiate with overseas carriers to offer users better international roaming services, the companies said yesterday.
Top executives attended the signing ceremony, including Lu Yimin, general manager of China Unicom, and Yang Jie, general manager of China Telecom.
Analysts said the cooperation with the two relatively smaller carriers will improve services and cut costs.
By 2015, China had about 1.3 billion mobile users. Among them, China Mobile had 800 million users, accounting for 61.5 percent of the market. It has more than 100 million high-end 4G users, more than the combined figure of China Unicom and China Telecom.
Besides mobile business, China Telecom and China Unicom also have fixed-line business including family broadband services.
But China Mobile has expanded into the sector by offering high-end users free or low-cost family broadband services.
