303m Chinese access Internet via smart phone
CHINA'S web users who visit the Internet through mobile phones rose 23 percent in 2010 from a year ago to 303 million due to the spread of smart phones, China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) said today in a report.
An average net user spends 2.6 hours a day on the Internet, said the report based on a survey of 60,000 web surfers around the country.
The country's total number of Internet users rose 16 percent to 437 million by the end of last year.
Search engine is the most used category of the Internet with nearly 82 percent of net users turning to the search sites to look up news and information.
"Domestic search engine operators are upgrading their services with microblogs; social network sites are providing millions of pieces of information; and search engines are offering more diversified and optimized services," the report said.
Instead of playing games and watching videos, more people are turning to the Internet for e-commerce and online shopping. The number of online shoppers jumped 48.6 percent from a year earlier to 160.5 million, while online banking users reached 139.5 million, up 30.5 percent.
Microblog also became a fad in 2010 with 63.1 million microblog users in China.
An increasing number of small and medium-sized enterprises are using the Internet to market their products. More than 43 percent of Chinese manufacturers have their own online shopping platforms or have shops on third-party platforms such as Alibaba Group's Taobao.com.
