360Buy fixes bug to stop free payments

ONE of China's largest online shopping websites, 360Buy, has fixed a technical loophole that let online shoppers using their website membership points to pay mobile phone bills and lottery tickets for free as no credits were deducted from their accounts.

The glitch involving 360Buy's online charging system started to appear on Tuesday night when consumers found they could use its online charging platform to charge mobile phone bills without actually paying for the bills.

The Beijing-based online retailer reportedly suffered a 200 million-yuan (US$31.7 million) loss, which 360Buy denied saying the amount was a rumor.

360Buy said yesterday it has reported the matter to the police and will negotiate with consumers who used the loophole, but it didn't elaborate.

The company added it reserves the right to pursue legal action against those who maliciously exploited the loophole.

360Buy's online charging platform, which lets users pay for phone bills, lottery tickets and online game gift cards using their existing membership credits, was launched on Tuesday and the bug was found shortly after.
