4G boom, local firms boost sales of mobiles
CHINA’S mobile phone sales jumped 15 percent year on year in 2015, largely due to the presence of domestic brands and the popularity of 4G, the industry regulator said yesterday.
The domestic mobile phone sales reached 518 million units in 2015, a 14.6 percent growth year on year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said yesterday.
The growth rate was higher than the global sales, with research firm International Data Corp predicting a “single-digit” growth.
China-brand phone sales reached 429 million units, a 21.1 percent increase from a year ago, the ministry said.
Globally, Chinese firms took three spots among the top-five brands last year. Huawei, Xiaomi and Lenovo grabbed market shares in the global smartphone markets.
Huawei sold more than 100 million phones in 2015, the first Chinese firm to achieve that after Samsung and Apple. Firms including Lenovo, Huawei, ZTE and OnePlus also made inroads into the overseas markets.
Among the total handset sales, the 4G phone sales hit 440 million, accounting for 85 percent of the total sales in 2015, the ministry said.
