594m people use mobile phones to get online
ALMOST 90 percent of China’s Internet users have at some point used a mobile phone to get online, a study said yesterday.
According to a report by the China Internet Network Information Center, the country had 668 million Internet users at the end of last month, of which 594 million said they had connected to it via their phones.
Shopping, making payments and booking holidays were among the most popular reasons for surfing by smartphone, the report said, adding that 56 million people said they had used their handsets to buy and sell shares.
The low-cost of mobile communications and popularity of smartphones have helped drive the trend, unnamed analysts were quoted as saying.
Chinese firms Xiaomi and Huawei are among the world’s top-five handset vendors, after undercutting competitors like Apple and Samsung on price.
China’s telecom carriers have been told to reduce broadband and 4G charges by up to 30 percent by the end of the year.
