8 packages as China Unicom 4G services start in 25 cities
CHINA Unicom yesterday launched commercial use of its 4G services and expects to sell 100 million 4G phones by the end of this year, the country’s No. 2 mobile carrier said.
It started 4G services in 25 cities, including Shanghai and Beijing, and it will cover more than 300 cities by the year-end.
The 4G technology offers mobile Internet access 20-50 times faster than the current 3G network and will create a new trillion yuan market for devices and services. It has become the key technology for carriers to woo high-end users in China, the world’s No. 1 phone market.
China Unicom now offers eight 4G packages from 78 yuan (US$12.61) with 400 megabytes data a month to 596 yuan for 11 gigabytes capacity. The entry-level package of 78 yuan is lower than that offered by bigger rival China Mobile, which launched its 4G services in January with an entry-level package of 138 yuan package for 600MB.
But China Mobile will “soon” unveil a new package of 88 yuan for 400MB, according to the company’s website.
China Unicom plans to launch more customized packages and will, in future, allow several users to share one 4G package, according to China Unicom Chairman Chang Xiaobing.
China Unicom aims to sell 188 million phones in 2014, including 100 million 4G phones, compared with China Mobile’s target of 190-220 million.
China Unicom has cooperated with Samsung, Coolpad, Huawei and ZTE to kick off its 4G phones, which sells at a minimum price of 1,000 yuan each.
To promote its products, China Unicom has signed a deal with e-commerce service providers, including Amazon China and Dangdang.com, to sell phones and services online.
