Alibaba, Focus Media partner on group-buying deals

CHINA'S largest e-commerce company Alibaba today launched a partnership with Shanghai-based outdoor advertising firm Focus Media to allow smart phone users to buy deals on its group-buying site Juhuasuan.com.
Alibaba's daily deals site will put buying links on Focus Media's LCD display networks to allow users to pay through scanning quick response codes using its online payment unit Alipay's cell phone application.
The Internet company hopes to combine its rich consumer resource with Focus Media's extensive advertising network in major domestic cities.
It's also the company's latest efforts to extend its business from online to offline to tap strong consumer spending power.
The convenience of scanning the QR code and rapid payment through smart phone applications, online vendors will be able to reach consumers who do not necessarily visit websites regularly.
Juhuasuan said last year its transaction volume was 10.2 billion yuan (US$1.6 billion), the highest among domestic daily deals websites.
