Alibaba, IPR owners pledge joint fight
ALIBABA Group joined forces with several global intellectual property rights owners to fight IPR infringement, and unveiled an online system that will enhance the effectiveness of the anti-counterfeit measures.
Its move came after several of Alibaba’s anti-counterfeiting efforts raised skepticism among foreign brand owners who pointed to a lack of efforts from the e-commerce giant to stop counterfeit goods from being sold on its online platform.
In May, the Washington-based International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition suspended Alibaba’s membership after its inclusion raised controversy among some members who claimed the company didn’t use all its resources to remove fakes from its platform.
Zheng Junfang, chief platform governance officer at Alibaba, said it was unable to authenticate products through its platform with full certainty.
“Our only choice is to join forces to fight counterfeit products,” she said yesterday.
Alibaba’s new system allows brands to identify the authenticity of a product and easily notify Alibaba of the infringement. It will also inform brand owners about links to suspicious products. More than 180 brands, including Louis Vuitton, Panasonic, Pernod Ricard and Meizu, have agreed to join it.
The system will also inform the public the process on how the suspect products and vendors are handled.
