Alibaba, Shanghai to work on smart city
ALIBABA Group and the Shanghai government yesterday signed an agreement to cooperate on smart city and IT services, following a similar deal last month between Tencent and the city.
Yesterday’s deal seeks to leverage Shanghai’s cross border e-commerce pilot project to allow overseas vendors to put their merchandise in bonded zones to ensure quicker custom clearance and a shorter delivery time.
Shanghai is among six other cities including Hangzhou, Chongqing and Guangzhou to be allowed to test the program.
Shanghai Vice Mayor Zhou Bo and Alibaba Group President Jin Jianhang signed the agreement in the city yesterday. So far, Alibaba has teamed up with 15 provincial or city level governments for such deals.
Shanghai is also set to become a key hub in Alibaba’s smart logistics network that will cover the Yangtze River Delta region. Alibaba will also provide support for the city’s cloud computing industry by encouraging local companies to adopt its data technology capabilities and shift their business focus to the Internet.
The central government has unveiled the “Internet Plus” action plan which seeks innovation-driven development as well as applying smart technologies and integrating the mobile Internet.
Both Tencent and Alibaba have asked the Shanghai government to move part of their public services, such as applications for car license plates, social security and hospital registration, to each company’s mobile app.
