Alibaba forms JV for cloud computing with Meraas
ALIBABA Group said it has established a cloud computing joint venture with Dubai-based conglomerate Meraas Holdings as it takes a major step in its overseas expansion.
The joint venture, to be based in Dubai, will engage in application development and big data operations as it targets the strong growth potential of the information and communication technology products, according to a joint statement yesterday.
The joint venture will offer system integration services to help customers reduce information technology spending.
“Dubai’s advanced infrastructure and economic strength is a good match for our technology edge, and with Meraas we will be able to provide local entrepreneurs with the technology infrastructure to help them grow and succeed,” Alibaba chairman Jack Ma said in a statement.
The two parties didn’t disclose their stake holding in the new venture.
The Dubai data center will be Alibaba’s seventh data operation facility and third overseas beside Hong Kong and the United States.
Alibaba aims to expand its international revenue as globalization is one of the key strategies laid out by Ma when the company completed its US$25 billion listing on the New York Stock Exchange in September last year.
