Alibaba in partnership with Quixey

E-COMMERCE giant Alibaba yesterday announced a partnership with search engine for apps company Quixey.
This is part of Alibaba intensifying efforts in the mobile search sector during a time of massive shift to smartphones from desktop computers.
California-based Quixey, in which Alibaba invested US$50 million last year, will provide the only search engine on Alibaba’s Android-based smartphone operating system YunOS.
Alibaba has been stepping up efforts to expand its products and services, especially those from overseas partners, after a record-breaking initial public offering last month.
The e-commerce company is also building demonstration zones in Zhejiang Province that allow app developers, public transport companies and travel agencies to leverage its cloud computing capabilities, it said yesterday at a developers’ conference in Zhejiang’s capital Hangzhou, where Alibaba has its headquarters.
Alibaba is incorporating Quixey’s deep-linking technology into YunOS to allow consumers to find apps by searching for functions rather than key words.
Alibaba unveiled its mobile OS back in 2011 and it is now running on handsets made by dozens of domestic smartphone manufacturers.
It is soon to unveil a new version of YunOS, as well as a new handset, but company officials didn’t give further details yesterday.
The Chinese e-commerce giant has been making investments in a number of overseas companies — including in online retail, mobile messaging, logistics and gaming — in order to lift its profile in the international market.
