Alibaba’s proposed takeover of AutoNavi mapping to bolster online dominance

ALIBABA’S proposed offer to take over online mapping company AutoNavi Holdings will help maintain its dominance in the domestic online shopping sector, analysts and industry watchers said.

"Online mapping is an important channel to connect offline vendors with online shopping and payment, and could complement Alibaba's existing business," said Yin Jingxue, an analyst with research firm Analysys International.

Xiang Ligang, a veteran telecommunications industry watcher, pointed out that Alibaba has been fast to react in terms of building an "infrastructure" for its online business.

China had about 750 million online mapping users by the end of the third quarter last year, with AutoNavi taking the largest market share of 31.3 percent, followed by Baidu Map's 26.6 percent, according to Analysys International.

Alibaba, the Hangzhou-based e-commerce giant, offered to pay US$1.1 billion for the 72 percent stake of AutoNavi it doesn't already own.

Banking on Alibaba's rich experience with online payments and managing online vendors, observers said AutoNavi is also expected to offer improved service.
