Alipay expands offline presence

ALIBABA'S payment service Alipay is collaborating with department stores to play a bigger role in the lives of its users.

In a partnership with WestBrook Paradise, a commercial shopping complex near Xixi Westland in suburban Hangzhou, Alipay will allow users to have a free Wi-Fi connection through its mobile software.

Users of Alipay's smartphone application will also be able to get coupons from vendors at the shopping complex as well as tailor-made discount information.

Alipay is seeking to provide its payment service not only for online vendors, but also stores and shopping centers.

It has extended its presence by offering a variety of services such as allowing users to pay utility fees and credit card bills, as well as buy wealth management products.

Fan Zhiming, head of Alipay's domestic business unit, said the company hopes to build a platform to allow other service providers to easily connect with consumers.
