Alipay to allow purchase of movie tickets via smartphone
ALIPAY, the payment arm of China's largest e-commerce company Alibaba Group, said it has teamed up with two leading cinema lines to allow customers pay for their tickets on smartphone applications as the company expands it service into the offline service realm.
Jinyi Cinemas and Wanda Cinemas, two of the leading cinema companies, have started to allow users to pay for tickets through Alipay's smartphone platform. Moviegoers can also pay for tickets at a special vending machine designed for Alipay.
China's box office is expected to reach 22 billion yuan (US$3.6 billion) this year, and movie theater owners continue to add new screens to the market.
Alipay said it plans to cover half of the movie theaters in the domestic market within the first half of next year as it sees huge growth potential for the new payment method.
