Amazon eyes cloud computing in China

Amazon.com will start public cloud computing services in China next year, becoming the latest company to offer localized services in the world’s biggest market for Internet, computer and mobile phone users, it said yesterday.

Amazon, with its AWS (Amazon Web Services) cloud services, managed to find multiple local partners, including ChinaNetCenter, to deliver AWS in the country. China will be the fourth AWS region in Asia-Pacific and the 10th region globally.

The entry of AWS and Amazon’s partners will enrich the whole ecosystem of cloud computing in China, said Chen Ying, chief technology officer of Jiangsu Wesedu.

Alex Yung, managing director of AWS China, said the data centers are in Beijing and Ningxia in northwest China.

Microsoft, IBM and SAP also provide cloud services in China. Cloud services allow the use of computing, storage, database, integration and networking through cloud servers and various devices.

Microsoft also signed a deal with Lenovo on cloud services yesterday. In June, Microsoft launched its cloud services for Office 365 and Windows Azure through partner 21Vianet.

Alibaba, which provides cloud services for domestic firms, said yesterday that it would invest 100 million yuan (US$16.3 million) to further develop the services.

IBM also said yesterday that it will cooperate with 21Vianet on cloud-related services.
