Apple To Open 5th Retail Store In Shanghai

Apple Inc will open a new retail store on Nanjing Road E. in Shanghai this summer, which will also be its biggest on the Chinese mainland, the iPhone and iPad developer said yesterday.

It will be Apple's fifth retail store on the Chinese mainland. In September, Apple opened two stores in Beijing and Shanghai to double its store number to four on the mainland.

The four Apple Stores welcome a combined daily average visitor traffic of 40,000, four times the global level, Apple said.

In the quarter ended December 25, Apple China's revenue totaled US$2.6 billion, a fourfold rise from a year ago. It now accounts for 10 percent of Apple's global revenue of US$26.7 billion in the quarter.

"Of the BRIC countries - Brazil, Russia, India and China - we identified China as our top priority years ago. And we put enormous energy into China," Apple's Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook said recently.

Apple plans to open 25 stores in China "as soon as possible," Ron Johnson, Apple's senior vice president of retail, said earlier.
