Apple may have to think twice about using iTV name too

APPLE Inc, which is involved in a legal battle over its iPad trademark in China, may have to think again about another trademark name if it wants to launch a smart TV called "iTV" in the country, Shanghai Daily learned today.

At least two firms, including Qingdao-based Hisense Group, have launched related products or claimed the iTV trademark ownership recently.

Hisense, one of the major home appliance makers in China, kicked off a tablet computer called I'TV Mobile TV that can synchronize video content with Hisense's TV products and control other devices like refrigerators and air conditioners through Wi-Fi or radio technologies.

The I'TV mobile TV represents the vision of Hisense's strategy as well as its future technology roadmap, the company said.

Meanwhile, UK-based Independent Television, also known as ITV, claimed the ownership of the ITV trademark and had warned Apple to avoid using the trademark on its coming TV product, media reported today.

Apple, which makes popular consumer electronics like the iPod, iPhone and iPad, is going to kick off a smart TV product by the end of this year to access the Internet and operate iPhone and iPad applications, according to analysts and industry officials.

As is its company policy, Apple declined to comment on unreleased products.

But the recent iPad case in China has reminded people that the ITV trademark owners may benefit from it, if that is what Apple really wants to name it.

A Shenzhen court in December rejected a suit brought by Apple in which it sought to gain control of the iPad trademark from the Shenzhen branch of Proview Electronics (Taiwan), an electronics manufacturer.

Apple then decided to appeal to the Guangdong provincial court.

A Shanghai court is scheduled to hear the iPad case next Wednesday.

If Apple lost these cases, it may be forbidden to use the iPad trademark in the Chinese mainland market. Otherwise Apple has to pay a large sum to buy the right to use it, which is expected to hit 10 billion yuan (US$1.58 billion).

In the third quarter of 2011, Apple China's revenue, mainly from the sales of its iPhone and iPad products, reached US$3.8 billion, six times that of the same period of the previous year.
