Apple offers power-adapter exchange amid safety concern
People with third-party or counterfeit power adapters for iPhone, iPad and iPod are able to swap them for certificated Apple models for 68 yuan (US$11) starting Friday on China's mainland, Apple said today.
The program came after death and dangerous electric shock reports linked to third-party iPhone chargers in China. The program will also start one week later in overseas markets, including the United States, on August 16.
Users can swap the adapters with Apple gadgets in Apple Stores and its authorized service providers. In the special program for any USB power adapters made for use with iPhone, iPad, and iPod, users can swap them with Apple adapters with a special price of 68 yuan, compared with a regular price of 149 yuan.
In Shanghai, three Apple Stores are located in Huaihai Road, Nanjing Road and Lujiazui of the Pudong New Area. Besides the three stores, there are 13 local Apple authorized services providers.
"Customer safety is a top priority at Apple," Apple said on its Website. "Recent reports have suggested that some counterfeit and third party adapters may not be designed properly and could result in safety issues."
Apple also said it ensured that these adapters are disposed in an environmentally friendly way. The program is valid until October 18, according to Apple.
In June, Apple had issued a safety reminder and advised consumers to choose authorized products in China.
The 23-year-old Ma Ailun, former flight attendant for China Southern Airlines, was found dead with her iPhone by her side and a charger attached last month. A 30-year-old Beijing man was in a coma after he got an electric shock when trying to recharge his iPhone.
