Apple receives mainland license for latest iPad
APPLE Inc has received a telecommunications license to release the third-generation iPad on the mainland, Shanghai Daily learned today.
The Telecommunications Equipment and Certification Center (TENAA) approved the device, which supports 3G. TENAA is under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
The new iPad debuted in the United States and many other countries in March. It will support the WCDMA (sideband code division multiple access) 3G network adopted by China Unicom.
Previously, Apple had launched wi-fi only iPad models on the mainland even though it launched both wi-fi and 3G models overseas.
An ongoing lawsuit over the iPad trademark may influence the new iPad's launch. Shenzhen-based Proview has sued Apple to claim ownership of the iPad trademark on the mainland.
Both sides are in court ordered negotiations, according to Proview's lawyers.
Apple declined to comment on the lawsuit.
