Apple set to sell new iPads in November
Apple Inc will start selling the next-generation iPads in China next month, the United States-based technology giant said yesterday.
The iPad Air, 28 percent lighter than the previous model, will start selling in China, one of the first group of markets where the new devices will be sold, on November 1. It will cost from 3,588 yuan (US$583) for 16-gigabyte model to 5,688 yuan for 128GB model.
The iPad Mini with Retina display will be available later in November and priced from 2,888 yuan for 16GB model to 4,988 yuan for 128GB model.
Apple also announced free upgrade of the OS X Mavericks operating system for the latest Mac computers.
Market observers said this represents a new trend of offering free software in the information technology industry, which is seen as a challenge to Microsoft which still charges users several hundred to thousand yuan to upgrade their Windows system that runs on more than 90 percent of global personal computers.
“This is yet another example of one of the keys to being a successful player in the consumer tech market: using your core business to subsidize low-cost or free products in other categories,” Jan Dawson, chief telecoms analyst at research firm Ovum, said yesterday in a note.
For example, Amazon uses its e-commerce and digital sales to fund devices, Google uses advertising revenue to fund its software and services, and Apple is now using hardware to subsidize software across the board.
Apple also upgraded its flagship laptop Macbook Pro.
