AutoNavi, Sina team up to boost income, user base
AUTONAVI, which provides map services for iPhones and most Android phones sold in China, announced cooperation with Sina Weibo to integrate location and social services to attract more users in future, both sides said today in Beijing.
Their cooperation will benefit millions of Chinese users because Sina Weibo has more than 400 million users while AutoNavi has about 100 million users.
Better location services will help Sina to cash in on its popular Weibo microblogging site that hasn't found a money-making model despite its huge user base. The new map services are likely to debut in the first half of next year and will include mobile advertising and coupons based on location, said Wang Gaofei, Sina's vice president.
"It's a win-win cooperation because it represents the trend of SoLoMo," said Qie Jianjun, vice president of AutoNavi, which is listed on Nasdaq.
SoLoMo means the convergence of social, location and mobile services. It is expected to bring companies considerable income and loyal customers, industry insiders said.
Under the agreement, AutoNavi and Sina will merge their user database, allow users to see their friends' location and places with their friends' comments. Both sides will also find off-line partners in advertising and group purchase deals.
By the end of September, AutoNavi grabbed 29.5 percent of China's mobile map market, ahead of Baidu.com and Google Maps, according to Analysys International, a Beijing-based research firm.
Apple Inc also chose AutoNavi to replace Google Maps in its latest mobile operating system for Chinese mainland users, which further boosted AutoNavi's user base.
AutoNavi map services are pre-installed in new phones, including brands like Motorola and HTC.
