Baidu sues Sogou on unfair competition

BEIJING Haidian District Court yesterday heard Baidu's lawsuit against Sohu's online search unit Sogou for illicit competition as Internet giants stepped up competition on the mobile Internet sector.

Baidu, the country's top search engine operator, asked for 1 million yuan (US$160,000) of compensation for the loss of its legitimate business income.

Baidu argued that Sogou had been "hijacking" Baidu's search traffic on mobile search sites and therefore reduced the chance for Baidu to display its search results to mobile phone users.

Sogou's smartphone browser software had been confusing and misleading users to visit Sogou's search results instead of Baidu's through the built-in search box on Sogou smartphone browsers.

Sogou denied intentionally leading users to its own website and argued that it didn't prevent users from visiting Baidu's search results, therefore not hurting Baidu's potential traffic and income, according to the transcript of the trial on the official website of the Haidian Court. Users have been fully informed and can choose whether to use Baidu's or Sogou's search results, the company argued.

The plaintiff and the defendant were given two weeks of time for mediation on their own and the court will hear the result.
