Baidu targets firms, releases BaiduEye device
CHINA’S largest search engine Baidu yesterday said it will offer companies an “official service account” later this year to allow easier access to services like restaurant booking or buying movie tickets as the firm seeks to tap the rising search demand on smartphones.
The official service accounts will offer a mini mobile-customized webpage that contains product information and can also take orders and payments from consumers.
Users can access the service accounts from Baidu’s mobile applications such as Baidu search, Baidu Map and other mobile Internet products on smartphones, Baidu Vice President Li Mingyuan said.
The service allows merchants and software developers to build online-to-offline (O2O) applications to lure potential customers to nearby shops and restaurants via search results and ads displayed on Baidu’s smartphone applications.
Baidu is investing in mobile apps to capture rising web traffic on smartphones and tablet computers as it seeks to grow its presence in the offline sector as an increasing number of users search for services.
In the second quarter, Baidu’s mobile income contributed 30 percent to its revenue as the shift toward smart devices accelerated.
Baidu aims to better connect service providers with consumers, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Robin Li told the annual Baidu Technology Innovation Conference in Beijing.
At the conference, Baidu also released its latest wearable device called BaiduEye that can scan objects as well as recognize voice orders to provide search results and sync with a smartphone. The device can also provide an indoor mapping service, and Baidu said in a separate statement yesterday that it has invested US$10 million for a minority stake in indoor location positioning company IndoorAtlas to expand mapping services inside shopping complexes.
