Baidu to allow app access via its search engine
CHINA’S largest search engine operator Baidu said it will allow users to have access to various of applications through its own search entrance instead of downloading an independent application.
Dozens of so-called “light” applications such as online taxi booking and house rental services are now available through a beta version of Baidu’s search program for Android system smart phones. More services in music streaming and online restaurant booking will be available in the near future, the company said.
Baidu’s mobile search traffic has grown 16 times since 2010, Li Mingyuan, Baidu’s vice president and general manager of its cloud computing unit, said at the company’s annual technology innovation conference in Beijing today.
As many as 69 million applications are downloaded through Baidu’s search site and its distribution site 91 Wireless each day, but the number is still very small compared with tens of millions of Baidu’s mobile search users on desktop and mobile devices everyday, Li added.
The company is trying to leverage the search requests and link them towards as much as a million independent applications, most of which are “long-tail” applications that are not easily found in official app stores such as Apple’s App Store and Google Play.
