Baidu to offer patented music download after solving dispute

CHINA'S largest search engine Baidu said it will offer users patented music streaming and download services through a licensing deal with three leading music companies in a bid to shift to a more legitimate business model.

The agreement between Baidu and One-Stop China, a joint venture between Universal Music, Warner Music and Sony Music, will allow the Chinese search company to have access to their music database and upcoming new tracks.

The three music labels will offer more than 500,000 songs to be stored on Baidu's servers and users can access them through the social music platform, ting.baidu.com.

"Baidu's move will push the legalization process of the Internet industry," said Liu Ping, secretary general of the Music Copyright Society of China.

Baidu will pay music copyright owners each time a song is played or downloaded through its service.

Back in 2007, Google joined Top100.cn to provide a similar service with licensed music streaming service on an advertising-support project.
