Baidu to offer service account for companies later this year
CHINA’S largest search engine Baidu said today that it will start offering companies an “official service account” later this year to allow easier access to services ranging from restaurant booking to movie tickets buying to capture the rising search demand on smartphones.
The official service accounts will offer a mini mobile-adapted webpage that contains product information and can also take orders and payments from consumers.
Baidu vice president Li Mingyuan said users can access the service accounts from Baidu’s mobile applications such as Baidu search, Baidu Map and other mobile Internet products on smartphones.
Baidu chairman and chief executive officer Robin Li told the annual Baidu Technology Innovation Conference in Beijing today that the company aims to better connect service providers with consumers instead of just providing them with information and knowledge.
Baidu is investing in mobile applications to capture rising Web traffic on smartphones and tablet computers seeking to expand its presence in the offline sector as more and more users are searching for services instead of information and basic facts.
He expects that the number of search requests based on audio and pictures will make more than half of its total search demand in five years.
In the second quarter Baidu’s mobile income contributed 30 percent to its revenue, with faster shift toward smart devices from desktop computers.
“Users’ search demand in the mobile Internet era is closely connected to the time and location and Baidu’s new move is expected to offer direct and more efficient link between service providers,” said independent industry commentator Hong Bo.
