Baidu unit unveils new Internet TV model
IQiyi, the online video unit of Baidu, China's largest search engine, has teamed up with electric appliance maker TCL and yesterday unveiled a new Internet TV model as it joins other online video sites to cover both hardware and software.
IQiyi Chief Executive Officer Gong Yu said the company's strategy is to provide service to hardware makers and offer high quality content to viewers.
Domestic online video site LeTV joined hands with Foxconn earlier this year to launch smart TV sets and set-top boxes in order to allow users access to its content library through various channels.
Smart phone maker Xiaomi is also eyeing a similar product.
Industry watchers pointed out that the competition in the smart TV sector is heating up as online video sites are seeking to consolidate their market position and extend service to more TV viewers apart from existing viewers on desktop computers and mobile devices.
