Bankcard holders spend more, feel confident

CONFIDENCE among Chinese bankcard holders rose in June as people increased spending on travel and non-daily necessities like jewelry, an industry report showed.

The Bankcard Consumer Confidence Index rose 0.61 from a year ago to 86.67, said a report released today by China UnionPay, the country's sole bankcard transaction firm.

The figure was up 0.14 in June from the previous month, the report said.

The Dragon Boat Festival and the approaching summer holiday boosted spending at tourism attractions and hotels.

Overall spending on jewelry climbed 1.1 percent from a month ago as several jewelry exhibitions were held last month in cities including Nanjing and Xi'an.

China UnionPay said subsidies for energy-efficient consumer products started at the beginning of June and looser monetary policies have pushed up consumers' confidence.

At the same time, the average amount of billings at supermarkets and other retail outlets was down 8.8 percent from a month earlier.

An automobile trade-in incentive and other policies to promote sales of energy-saving vehicles will push the BCCI higher in the next few months, the report said.
