Beidou gets product support from 2 giants
Qualcomm Inc and Samsung will launch products to support China’s own navigation system Beidou to help it break the monopoly of the US-developed global positioning system.
The world’s top mobile chip designer and No. 1 smartphone maker will debut a new version of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3, one of most popular smartphones sold in the market, that will work on China’s 4G technology TD-LTE and the Beidou navigation system, the companies said yesterday.
The homegrown Beidou navigation system is currently mainly used by the military and industries such as mapping, land resources and water conservation. By 2020 Beidou is expected to contribute revenue of 400 billion yuan (US$66 billion) with improved positioning, global satellite coverage, wide civilian use and convergence of mobile devices.
