BesTV taps new media for 31.1% profit jump

BESTV yesterday posted a 31.1 percent jump in net profit last year as it tapped the boom in new media business such as IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) and mobile entertainment services.

The company’s net earnings amounted to 677 million yuan (US$109 million) last year, while revenue rose 30 percent to 2.64 billion yuan.

BesTV identified mobile Internet and new media business as profit engines. By 2013, BesTV had more than 16 million mobile TV users and income from mobile Internet jumped above 60 percent, according to the Shanghai-listed firm.

BesTV had 20 million users of IPTV nationwide, its core business, including 13 million paid users.

The company, slated to become a flagship new media platform of state-owned media giant Shanghai Media Group, also expects to debut a new home entertainment system — perhaps a Chinese version of XBox — by the end of this year through a partnership with US-based Microsoft Corp.
