Big amount lost to cybercrime


CHINESE computer users lost US$46 billion last year, which accounted for almost half of the total loss globally, after falling prey to cybercrime, according to a US-based Internet security firm in Shanghai .

Last year about 257 million Chinese online users became victims of cybercrime, which includes online attacks, malware programs and phishing websites.

"Though most people have basic anti-virus tool on their computers, they still lack awareness about Internet security like password management and personal information protection," said Elaine Chan, Symantec China's market development director, yesterday.

American users lost US$21 billion to cybercrime and European users lost US$16 billion, according to Symantec which is well-known for its Norton anti-virus software protection brand. Globally, the direct financial loss totaled US$110 billion.

Chinese users, who like purchasing products or services on the Internet, face hacker programs, fake websites and unreliable online payment methods every day, according to Taobao.com, China's biggest online auction website.
