Big data revenue to grow 34% till 2017
The revenue of big data technology and services is expected to grow fourfold from 2012 to 2017 in the Asia Pacific region, excluding Japan, because of the rapid development of e-commerce, mobile Internet and social media, International Data Corp said yesterday.
IDC sees the revenue of big data technology and services, which help enterprises and organizations predict consumer behavior and user habit, growing at 34.1 percent annually from US$548.4 million in 2012 to US$2.38 billion in 2017.
China, with an online population of above 500 million, has great potential for big data applications. The technology is now used in popular cyber applications like Sina Weibo, Youku Tudou’s video services and Alibaba’s e-commerce, industry insiders said.
“China and India are making significant investments in big data, with much of the focus on infrastructure spending during the forecast period driven by hyperscale data centers,” said Craig Stires, IDC analyst.
Alibaba.com, which generated 35 billion yuan (US$5.69 billion) in an online shopping frenzy on Single’s Day on Monday, adopted big data technology to predict user demand and improve its logistics network nationwide.
Acxiom offered to help marketers integrate data and marketing tools both online and offline in the country.
