Big scope for roaming services
THE rising number of outbound Chinese travelers has opened a huge potential for roaming data and communications services in overseas markets, Shanghai Daily learned at a mobile communications event which opened yesterday in the city.
The entry of 11 Chinese mainland private firms, which got approval in 2013 to offer mobile business, has made the market more competitive, analysts said. It used to be dominated by state-owned giants like China Mobile and China Unicom.
Suzhou-based Snail, one of the earliest private firms to launch mobile communications services in the domestic market, debuted its SIM card services for overseas mobile communications markets at the Mobile World Congress Shanghai, one of the events during the Shanghai Digital Information Festival.
Snail, with more than 2 million Chinese mobile service users, offers the SIM cards for six overseas markets — the US, Singapore, South Korea, Japan, Thailand and Cambodia. Snail’s SIM cards will be sold in airports in Shanghai and Beijing, the firm said.
Snail said there were 110 million Chinese overseas roaming users last year and rapid growth is likely.
