Biggest number of Netizens in world

CHINA has now the biggest number of Netizens in the world when its user base jumped 20 percent to 360 million by the end of November, more than the population of the United States, the industry regulator said yesterday.

By the end of June, China's Internet penetration rate had surpassed 25.5 percent, higher than the world's average of 21.9 percent, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said.

More than 100 million users access the Internet through broadband lines, the ministry said.

"The new technology and application development, such as 3G, will boost the figure in future," said Zhao Zhiguo, a senior official at the ministry.

China's mobile phone users present another huge potential because including them is likely to double the Internet population to more than 720 million, analysts said. Currently a total of 192 million people in China accessed the Internet through handsets by November, a 67 percent annual growth, according to MIIT.

China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom have launched 3G, or third generation, services. By the end of October, China has 10 million 3G users, the ministry said.
