Blu-ray players to hit market next year
THE next-generation Blu-ray player will cost less than 1,000 yuan (US$147) and will hit the market next year, industry officials said.
China will also take in over 1 million high-definition (HD) media players, eight times more than last year. Blu-ray is an optical disc format that has five times more storage capability than traditional DVDs and HDs while heightening the image quality by four times.
Blu-ray's popularity is likely to soar due to its low-cost players and discs, enriched variety of content and tech upgrade such as its 3D device, an official with BDA (Blu-ray Disc Association) which includes Apple, LG, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips and Sony as its members, said.
"The sales volume will bring the costs down while the less-than 1,000 yuan Blu-ray device will debut next year," Wang Xiwen, general manager of Pioneer China's research and development center, said.
Currently, nine companies, including Pioneer and Sony (PS3), have about 20 Blu-ray products in the market costing between 1,000 to 3,000 yuan, Wang said.
Hu Qun, marketing director of the Shanghai Epic Music Entertainment Co Ltd, claimed that China's Blu-ray player sales are expected to touch 1 million units by the end of this year, compared to 120,000 units in 2009.
Pioneer's Wang said that more than 300 Blu-ray films have been sold in China, costing between 49 to 179 yuan.
The newest device is the 3D function, whose popularity has soared since the release of Hollywood blockbuster Avatar in China.
The latest variant will enable people to enjoy the HD and 3D formats in the luxury of their homes, officials said. Much of its success however depends on when China begins to broadcast 3D content.
