CIOs absent from most China firms
LESS than 30 percent of Chinese companies have appointed chief information officers, less than one-third of the United States level, Ernst & Young said yesterday in Shanghai.
The auditing firm attributed the low level to the fact that many Chinese firms don't consider seriously the return from their investment in information technology, although their IT spending has risen annually.
Only 27 percent of Chinese firms have CIOs with corresponding functions, compared with 85 percent of the firms in the United States, said Jean Francois Ausseur, Ernst & Young's advisory services partner.
"There are major regional differences in the role and status of IT. This (few CIOs in China) reflects the relatively low importance IT appears to hold in Chinese companies," said Ausseur.
