Call for cheaper smartphones

SMARTPHONES that cost less than 800 yuan (US$126) have a big potential in the domestic market, thanks to surging demand from telecommunications carriers and consumers, officials said yesterday at an industry forum in Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province.

Among the attributes demanded of phones in the entry-level handset market in China are low price of less than 800 yuan or even 600 yuan, 3G or faster network speed and customized design, Zhou Youmeng, China Unicom's marketing director, said at the 2012 Qualcomm China Partner Summit.

"It's a blue sea market as the smartphone replaces the feature phone," Zhou said. "Most giants are only focusing on the high-end market now but we need more 800 yuan phones for consumers."

Among all Chinese phones, only 1 percent of all handsets costing less 599 yuan are smartphones while only 6 percent models are smartphones in the sector priced between 600 to 799 yuan, which represents big market potential, Zhou said.

China's 3G user base will hit 300 million by the end of this year, compared with 1.5 billion at the end of April. Among the 300 million users, 44 percent will use smartphones, which means a market of more than 100 million units, Lenovo officials told the forum.
