Carriers to cooperate on Expo stations
ALL the telecommunication base stations in Shanghai's World Expo zone will be co-built or shared by three carriers to avoid duplication, China Mobile said yesterday.
A total of 13 mobile base stations will be built in the zone and they will be shared by China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom, China Mobile said at the ground-breaking ceremony for the first base station in Bailianjing area yesterday.
All 13 base stations will be built by the end of this year.
"As the World Expo partner, Shanghai Mobile will provide multi-services from 2G, 3G to WLAN (wireless local area network) to ensure communications for the event," said Zheng Huigang, vice general manager of Shanghai Mobile.
Shanghai Telecom and Shanghai Mobile are telecommunication partners of the Expo, which is expected to host 70 million visitors from 228 countries or regions.
The 13 base stations will be open to all carriers to support services covering both mobiles and fixed-lines.
In October, the Chinese government ordered the three domestic telecom operators to share and co-build infrastructure to avoid duplicating construction following the industry restructuring.
Shanghai Telecom and Shanghai Mobile will also build about 100 electronics information desks, which feature Wi-Fi and provide guide and location services as well as weather forecasts.
