China Mobile: 4G network coming soon
CHINA Mobile is going to introducing 4G network "very soon," which is 10 to 20 times faster than the current 3G network, the world's No. 1 wireless service provider said today.
China Mobile's 4G data card is close to debut and the carrier and partners are working on the research of 4G handset chip, Wang Jianzhou, China Mobile's chairman, said during the World Economic Forum held in Tianjin today.
China Mobile and UK-based Vodafone Group Plc are jointly developing a mobile device based on the 4G technology called LTE (long term evolution), even after the UK-based carrier ceased to be China Mobile's shareholder.
"Both the management and the board of Vodafone think they had a very good relationship and partnership with China Mobile and they will continue that," Wang said during the forum.
Last week, Vodafone raised US$6.5 billion by selling off its entire 3.2 percent stake in HK-listed China Mobile.
Based on 4G wireless communications technology, users will be able to access the Internet using handsets at a speed even higher than home broadband. The new technology will support various applications such as high definition video data transfer. LTE is now used in several cities in Europe and the United States.
China Mobile is expected to launch 4G mobile communication services as early as 2011 to boost its high-margin data services, according to the GSM Association.
China Mobile now is testing 4G technology at the World Expo 2010 site, which provides users peak download speed to more than 100 Mbps (megabits per second). That means it can download a DVD-quality film within 20 seconds on handset.
Chinese telecom equipment makers ZTE and Huawei are also researching on LTE and have won some LTE network contracts in Europe.
China Mobile will choose three Chinese cities for further LTE tests and commercial trial later, Wang said during a previous interview.
