China Mobile eyes 10,000 4G base stations in Shanghai after local users surpass 2m

CHINA Mobile said today aims to build 10,000 4G base stations in Shanghai, including those in the pilot Free Trade Zone, by the year’s end after capping 2 million 4G users in the city.

China Mobile doubled its 4G user in Shanghai from a million in two months, with 4G data flow reaching 600 million gigabytes to surpass 3G in October for the first time, Huang Gang, China Mobile’s deputy general manager, told a press conference.

“4G network is expanding faster than faster,” Huang said. “The most important thing to do with 4G is to provide a broader platform for innovative applications as well as the whole Internet industry.”

Within the 4G network, the company plans to release VoLTE service by the middle of 2015, which assures cellphone communication in a hi-fi quality and cuts down the connecting time from 9 seconds to nearly 1 second.

China Mobile may boast 70 million 4G users by the end of 2014, aiming to have 150 million 4G users in 2015 and 300 million in 2016, Li Zhengmao , the telco’s vice president, told the Global MBB Forum last month.
