China Mobile names Xi Party chief

CHINA Mobile yesterday announced the appointment of Xi Guohua as new Party chief and vice chairman.

Xi is a former vice head of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the country's top industry regulator.

Xi's appointment was regarded as the beginning of another shake-up in management among Chinese telecommunications carriers, which are all state-owned firms, industry insiders said.

Xi, 60, takes over from Wang Jianzhou, who remains chairman of China Mobile.

At present, China Mobile is the world's biggest mobile carrier with 600 million users, including 32 million 3G users.

China Mobile declined to comment.

Industry insiders said management reshuffles are fairly common among the state-owned telecommunications carriers.

China Telecom President Shang Bing has been rumored to be named Vice Minister of Industry and Information Technology.
