China Mobile taps iFlytek to challenge Apple's Siri

CHINA Mobile plans to acquire or invest in iFlytek, a voice assistant tool often regarded as China's Siri services, the world's biggest mobile carrier said today.

The carrier's latest move aimed at fighting against the new iPhone and iOS system which will integrate Siri services with Chinese language in future, industry insiders said.

Anhui USTC iFLytek Co, which halted trading today for an upcoming strategic investment announcement, declined to make comments.

The iFlytek products are widely used in Android devices, which help users to search and react on mobile phones through people's voice requests.

At present, smaller rivals China Unicom and China Telecom are official iPhone distribution partners with Apple, which erodes China Mobile's profit and market share.

Apple said in June that it would launch new iOS which features Siri for Chinese language in the summer.

In the second quarter, net profit of China Mobile was unchanged at 34.4 billion yuan (US$5.4 billion) compared with a year earlier, the carrier said today. Second-quarter profit was projected by analysts at 35.6 billion yuan, according to the Bloomberg. Revenue rose 5.4 percent to 139.1 billion yuan in the quarter, according to China Mobile.
