China Mobile’s 4G plans

CHINA Mobile aims to build 10,000 4G base stations in Shanghai, including in the pilot free trade zone, by the end of this year after its 4G users in the city reached 2 million in the first year of commercial service.

The world’s biggest mobile carrier by subscribers doubled its 4G user base in Shanghai between October and November, Huang Gang, China Mobile’s vice general manager, told a press conference yesterday.

“The 4G network is expanding faster,” Huang said. “The most important thing is to provide a broader 4G platform for innovative applications.”

By the middle of 2015, China Mobile plans to release a 4G network based on VoLTE (Voice over Long-Term Evolution), which assures Hi-Fi quality cellphone communication and cuts the connecting time from 9 seconds to nearly 1 second.

The carrier may boast 70 million 4G users across the country by the end of 2014, and aims to have 150 million in 2015 and 300 million in 2016, according to Li Zhengmao, its vice president.
