China Telecom starts 4G services in 100 cities next week

CHINA Telecom will kick off 4G services in about 100 cities nationwide next week, offering mobile phone users 20 to 50 times faster Internet access compared with current 3G services, the country’s No. 3 mobile carrier said today.
The new player in the 4G market will offer users different services and push down the price with competition, analysts said.
China Telecom offers users 4G data packages from 70 yuan (US$11.40) for 1GB (gigabyte) of data traffic to 280 yuan for 10GB, a level similar to that of China Mobile, which has offered 4G services for several months.
In Shanghai, people can pre-order 4G data services in eight China Telecom outlets including the ones in Caoxi Road in Xujiahui and Xindong Road in Xinzhuang. People can pick up related products in the outlets next Friday, according to local branch Shanghai Telecom.
At present, only 4G data cards and wireless routers are available in China Telecom’s outlets. The timetable of China Telecom’s 4G phone debut is not available.
China Mobile, the world’s No. 1 mobile carrier with over 700 million users, has launched 4G phones including latest iPhone 5s.
Compared with China Mobile, China Telecom offer users long-period data services, 300 yuan for 6GB within six months and 600 yuan for 12GB in a year. Each megabyte of data consumption except data packages costs users 0.3 yuan.
China’s information consumption revenue will hit 3.2 trillion yuan by 2015, with 20 percent growth year-on-year, experts predict. The 4G services, which improve mobile Internet speed and boost services on phones like video chatting, is a key catalyst to push information consumption, analysts said.
In Shanghai, China Telecom’s 4G network covers the Middle Ring region. It will cover the whole city by the end of this year with additional coverage at 1,100 indoors sites.
