China Unicom eyes 4G users with upgrade
CHINA Unicom hopes to attract 4G users in Shanghai by upgrading its network, offering low entry-level package and more choices of models, the country’s No. 2 mobile carrier said yesterday.
China Unicom’s 4G packages in Shanghai starts from 8 yuan (US$1.20) for 100 megabytes data traffic every month, which is only half of the entry-level packages offered by rivals China Mobile and China Telecom.
China Unicom has upgraded its network to 150 Mbps (megabyte per second) in downtown Shanghai, which is seven times compared to 3G bandwidth. The company’s 4G network now covers 80 percent within the outer-ring region with 4,000 4G base stations. It aims to have a total of 6,000 stations by the end of the year.
All new phones offered by China Unicom now will support 4G networks, said Deng Xuan, China Unicom Shanghai branch’s vice general manager.
